Sobriety Project

exhibit overview

The concept of this artistic expression is derived from an article titled, “How to be Spiritually Minded” by John Piper. In it Piper recalls visiting a dying man in the hospital stating, “...and it had, as always, a sobering effect and blew away much worldliness from my mind.” The goal of the project is to orchestrate and assemble a sobering experience on the subject of homelessness in the Aurora, Illinois area. Homeless or previously homeless individuals share their stories through portraiture and documentary photography. Audio interviews additionally serve to bring the stories to context for the viewer. The final work is represented as a “sobriety station” MoGa that is intended to be an effective communication tool for the issue of homelessness in Aurora, IL.

Ten 84" x 24" epson inkjet prints are displayed on panels constructed of riged board and overlaid with clear acrylic sheets. The panels are double-sided and hang on a free-standing kiosk steel frame, giving the whole show a sturdy, industrial feel. The five panels are connected in a regular hexagon shape, with viewers moving around the kiosk. Lighting is supplied for individual panels. The show fits into a 20’ x 20’x 10’ space. A single 360˚ speaker supplies an ambient narrative composed specifically to enhance the mood and overall sensory experience of the exhibit.
